At rs21’s last National Meeting in November, three speakers gave opening talks for a session on the British state, touching on three separate but related topics.
Scottish independence and the break-up of the British state
Pete C, of International Socialism Scotland, gave a talk on the progression of the Scottish pro-independence movement, and the opportunities for radical socialists to build a left-wing pole within it.
British nationalism and the global populist right
Anindya Bhattacharyya spoke about the right-wing populist project of Johnson’s Conservative Party, and how it relates to the global array of hard-right forces including the presidencies of Donald Trump in the US and Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil.
Border imperialism and migrant solidarity
Ida Picard, a member of East London rs21 and Lesbians and Gays Support the Migrants, spoke about border control as a aspect of British imperialism and state control of the working class.
Coalitions of the oppressed show the power of solidarity, but ruling classes use race and nationalism to divide workers. Shanice McBean explores how the left can overcome these divisions.
