Remember the dead, fight for the living

Ian Allinson

Saturday 28 April was International Workers’ Memorial Day, a day to remember all those killed by work or occupational diseases, and to campaign to prevent future deaths. This video shows moving speeches at the Manchester event by Caroline Gaunt, whose firefighter husband was killed by work, Kevan Nelson, Unison North West Regional Secretary, and a reading of the names of some of those killed at work.

The theme of the event this year was ‘Unionised workplaces are safer workplaces’. It is 40 years since the Safety Reps and Safety Committee Regulations (known as the ‘brown book’) came into force, giving legal status, protection, rights and powers to union health and safety reps for the first time.
