Não passarão – the fight against Bolsonaro

rs21

On Thursday 21 February, East London rs21 held an event to discuss the far-right turn in Brazilian politics, the implications for the struggle against the international far right, and what we can do to organise in solidarity. Listen to the talks by Annais Berlim (Brazilian Women Against Fascism) and Seth Uzman (Ele Não Students and rs21) here.

On 1 January 2019 Jair Bolsonaro assumed office. The international press has classified him variously as ultra-right, right wing radical and neo-fascist, and he represents the Brazilian manifestation of a far-right international that includes Netanyahu in Israel, Orbán in Hungary, Modi in India, and Trump in the United States. His declarations over the last 30 years, and even during the recent election campaign, have involved consistent praise for political violence, including torture and the military dictatorship, and has been laced with misogyny, homophobia, racism and xenophobia. Bolsonaro’s campaign was also marked by the demonisation of the left and social movements, notably resulting in the tragic murder of left activist Marielle Franco.

Annais Berlim related Bolsonaro’s rise to the long history of the Brazilian class struggle, colonialism and slavery, and argued that the resistance movement must be powerfully feminist and internationalist.

Seth Uzman is an organiser with Ele Não Students London and spoke about the prospects for solidarity campaigning in Britain in universities, trade unions and social movements.
