Video: Popular Uprisings from Belarus to Lebanon

On 12 September we were joined by three speakers to discuss movements of mass resistance unfolding around the world. In particular, we spoke about Lebanon, where the huge port explosion of 4 August has shaken society to its foundations, and Belarus, where organised and rapidly organising workers moved centre stage after the ignition of a revolt against long-time president Aliaksandr Lukashenka.

Speakers:

Rima Majed is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the American University of Beirut, and spoke on events in Lebanon after the catastrophic 4th August port explosion, and the popular movement in the wake of last year’s ‘October Revolution’ protests. Her opening remarks run from 00:00 to 16:45 in the video below.

Simon Pirani is writer, historian and researcher of energy, Russia, Ukraine. He spoke on the role of the Russian state in unfolding geopolitical events across Eastern Europe and beyond., from 40:45 to 58:00.

Volodymyr Artiukh is researcher on labour movements in Belarus and editor at Commons: Journal of Social Criticism. He spoke on the revolt in Belarus against Aliaksandr Lukashenka, from 58:50 to 1:12:30.
